Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

Information about this holy well is recorded in the Cumbria Historic Environment Record as HER number 1640. Their description reads: "Lady Well. Possible holy well. It is surrounded by a modern stone wall 1.4m high. The well itself is now silted up. Immediately adjacent to the well are the earthen bank remains of one or more probable fishponds. Both sites appear to relate to the ruined Bewley Castle, former residence of the Bishops of Carlisle".

The location of the well is shown on the National Library of Scotland 25 inch OS map of 1898 - see Westmorland IX.13 [link shared under the terms of their Creative Commons license CC-BY]. The wall around the well is clearly shown on Google Earth images.

There is no mention of the well in the Heritage Gateway, although the well is mentioned briefly in the Old Cumbria Gazetteer - see their entry for Lady Well.
