Barrow Cemetery in Shropshire

Once believed to be a cemetary of up to 12 barrows, the irregular collections of mounds on this site are now thought to be the result of water erosion.

Two large hoards of Bronze Age weapons have been found in the immediate vicinity; the first in 1790 and the second, of between 200-300 items including spearheads, axes and swords, in 1834/35. In 1835 five of the supposed barrows were excavated by antiquarians, but nothing was discovered.

The mounds are not marked on the modern OS map (have a look at the 1889 map where they are marked as tumuli and nearby is the location of the 1834/35 hoard), but are easily visible from the road that cuts through one of them. It is hard to pick out more than a handful of mounds, but some have possibly been destroyed by the plough since the site was de-scheduled in 1988.

An interesting site because of the nearby hoards and because of the antiquarian misinterpretation of a natural feature.
