I have visited· I would like to visit

TheCaptain visited on 8th May 2016 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Lovely limestone stone standing on a little grassy area at the junction of a couple of lanes, not actually in Rockhampton but the first junction along the road to the northeast from the village. Nicely looked after, its a shame I am too late for the daffodils.

Marker Stone in Gloucestershire. For many many years a Stone stood in the tiny hamlet of Rockhampton at or near the junction of the Thornbury/Berkeley old road (a known ancient trackway) and a small lane travelling east to Falfield.

A village on the old Roman Road known originally as the Western Trackway renamed (in part) as the Ridgeway which passed between Gloucester and Bristol (now the A38). There is reputedly a very early photograph of it from the turn of the 19th/20th centuries (a copy of which unfortunately I have not been able to gain). Then in the 1930s the Standing Stone 'went missing'. It was believed that it had somehow become buried when the road to Berkeley was topped with tarmacadam. -

In 1984/5 that same road to Berkeley was being widened (and it is still quite narrow even today) when the Stone was rediscovered - the Stone was re-erected within a few feet of its original position at the point where three hundreds (Berkeley; Langley and Swyneshead) in Gloucestershire meet.

Now there are many instances throughout the realm where old Hundreds meet by an ancient Standing Stone, suggesting that such stones were well known to local communities (probably as a meeting place for local early courts) and could be put to a newer use - to mark the Hundred or Parish boundaries.

In 1985 the then Avon County Archaeologist declared that the stone was certainly an old Saxon Boundary Marker which had become a Hundred marker but, more importantly declared, that the Stone was possibly prehistoric. It certainly has the look being fashioned roughly from the local holey (full of holes) limestone.

Today it is tended by locals and surrounded by daffodils, so DP Sullivan could not miss it even if he tried, which he did (miss it) in his pamphlets published in 1991 and 1999 - (is that a surprise or not?).

The Stone is 'Listed' as a listed building (sic) and mentioned on pastscape South Gloucestershire: Rockhampton: Monument No.201670 - there is something rather quaint about it - please do go and see it.
