Ancient Settlement in Greater Manchester (Salford)
Limited excavations were carried out on this one-hectare, double-ditched enclosure by Michael Nevell in the 1980s and radiocarbon analysis provided a date in the 1st century BC. There appeared to be several circular features within the enclosure. The site was bounded on three sides by Chat Moss, the Rixton/Risley Mosses and the Glazebrook, a tributary of the River Mersey. It may therefore have been placed to take advantage of the natural defences provided by the wetlands.
For further information see Nevell, M.D. “Great Woolden Hall: excavations on a late prehistoric /Romano-British native site”, Greater Manchester Archaeological Journal volume 3 (1989) and "Prehistoric Cheshire" by V & P Morgan, Landmark Publishng (2004).
