St Andrew's Well (Culgaith)
St Andrew's Well (Culgaith) submitted by Anne T : The well appears to be within Chapel Wood, see the National Library of Scotland map Map Sheet Cumberland LI.10. Grid references given by Jim Taylor Page, and a spring marked on the Historic England map search near his grid reference, indicate the well lies within the area denoted by the red circle. Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

The location of St Andrew's chapel, hermitage, and its associated well seems to be somewhat of a mystery. The well is mentioned in McIntyre's 1944 publication "The Holy Wells of Cumberland" (page 8), where he tells us that "Culgaith. Well at chapel and hermitage of St Andrew". McIntyre quotes 'Prescott, 'Wetherhal, page 311', although the only publication by Prescott that I've (so far) been able to track down is an inventory of Wetheral Priory (largely in Latin, but no mention of Culgaith as far as I've been able to find).

The well is also referenced in Jim Taylor Page's "Cumbrian Holy Wells" publication (1990, page 23). Giving a grid reference of NY 651 331, he tells us the well has only Christian association, with unknown origins, and gives a reference of "Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, 2nd series), Volume XXIII, page 8. The document page refers to is actually a report by Collingwood on excavation of a Roman fort; what I think Page is referring to is Volume 44, which is McIntyre's publication "The Holy Wells of Cumberland", where the well is listed on page 8.

Examination of both the 25inch and 6inch maps of the area show only a 'Chapel Wood' at the grid reference given by Page. Using the Historic England map search, I've been able to narrow down the location of what might be the well, shown as a spring at NY 65147 33049; usually historic sites are marked on this map, but nothing else is shown in a radius of 200m or so. There is a cross at the church of St Lawrence, Kirkland, grid reference: NY6460532509, although this is almost 800m to the south west of the grid reference given, indicating Christian activity within the area.

Internet searches haven't (yet) brought up any details of a St Andrew's Chapel or Hermitage in this area, either, but I'll keep on trying.

If anyone has any further information about this well, the chapel or the hermitage, I'd be delighted if you could leave a comment on this site page. Many thanks!
