Abson Church
Abson Church submitted by mishkin : This is the male sheela na gig to be found on the east wall of Abson church. There are also anglo-saxon knot design reused stones in the walls of the church. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sculptured Stone in South Gloucestershire. Male sheela na gig at Abson Church. Reused stone situated fairly high up on the East wall.

One article describes it as an ithyphallic demon, in other words, a pagan effigy, (could be Pan for instance) from an earlier church. Its probable later use is to frighten superstitious christian worshippers into conforming. Fragments of saxon knotwork stone in the wall, and doorway that may be saxon.

Roman and Saxon dominance round this part of South Gloucester is well recorded.
