St Mary and All Saints Church (Whalley)
St Mary and All Saints Church (Whalley) submitted by Sunny100 : The Roman altar-stone, dating from the 3rd-4th century CE, which has a carving of Mars, the Roman god of war. This large square-shaped stone was excavated in 1440 when the tower was being built. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sculptured Stone in Lancashire. In the church of St Mary & All Angels at Whalley (which stands on a 6th-7th century CE Saxon site) is what was considered to be a Roman column, but, now this is thought to be a Roman altar-stone, dating from the 3rd-4th century CE. The large square-shaped stone stands next to the churchwardens' pew in the N aisle. Carved onto the stone is a figure that is probably Mars, Roman god of war. It was, apparently, excavated from the ground when the tower was being built in 1440.

Also inside the church embedded into the inner archway of the north doorway is an inscribed stone, dating from 270 CE. The inscription in Latin reads: FLAVIUS VS VOTO SVSCEPTO OMPOSU (OR VOTO ARAM POS) which when translated reads 'Flavius after fulfilment of his vow set this up'.

Close to the font is a 13th century gravestone belonging to Peter de Cestria who died in 1295, and in the south wall a Medieval piscina, again of the 13th century. There a number of other interesting artefacts in the church and in the graveyard (including three 11th century Anglian crosses) - so it's well worth a visit.

My brother, who is a Roman expert, says YES it is a Roman altar. Hope the chap on Time Team agrees - he is Guy de la Bedoyere the Roman sites expert on Time Team.
