Homes fury over Roman finds site

People living in Peasedown St John are asking why a housing development is being allowed to go ahead, even though Roman pottery and an early Bronze Age henge have been discovered on the site.

The green light was given to 95 new homes, between the A367 bypass and Wellow Lane, at a planning meeting in December 2008.

But now, the archaeological finds, questions over an ancient hedgerow and revisions to plans have left residents furious.

Residents were sent a letter by Bath and North East Somerset Council on September 3 telling them the plans had been changed to allow a public open space around the area where the discovery had been made and that they had 14 days to speak out against them.

Aubrey Chegwyn, of Wellow Lane, said: "The letter was the first we had heard about it and we were shocked that despite what has been described as a significant find, the development is still to go ahead.

"We're disgusted that the developers and council seem to be able to do just what they want."

Mr Aubrey has also raised concerns about a hedgerow on the site, which he believes to be more than 50 years old and essential for wildlife.

Rob Duff, director of Pegasus, the planning company working for David Wilson Homes, attended a Peasedown Parish Council meeting on Monday to talk about the changed plans.

He said he did not know the extent of the archaeological finds and said the only replacement for the hedge would be the planting of shrubs between entrances to homes.

A B&NES spokeswoman said: "As part of the planning process the site was investigated archaeologically earlier this year.

"One very significant monument was located – a Neolithic or early Bronze Age henge-like monument with a pit in the centre containing Bronze Age pottery.

"Through negotiation with the applicants a revised layout for the housing development has now been submitted which will preserve this monument below one of the areas of public open space.

"On completion of post-excavation analysis, the pottery will be put into the Roman Baths Museum."
