Housesteads Roman Fort
Housesteads Roman Fort submitted by jeffrep : Housesteads was a Roman auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland near the border with Scotland constructed around 124 A.D. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Housesteads Roman Fort is the remains of an auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall, set high on a dramatic escarpment. The fort was built in stone around AD 124, soon after the construction of the wall began in AD 122. Now open all year round by English Heritage. You can wander the barrack blocks and the hospital. Peer into the ancient communal Roman toilets and admire the stunning panoramic views of this World Heritage Site from this ancient fortress.

The interactive museum managed by English Heritage showcases objects once belonging to Roman soldiers, and the mini-cinema will take you on a journey through time.

Housesteads Visitor Centre, run by the National Trust, adjacent to the car park provides a warm visitor welcome, orientation and facilities. Outside you can find a large 3D map detailing the scale of the Fort and the surrounding Whin Sill escarpment, and a glazed seating area perfect to enjoy refreshments on a sunny day.

Admission to Housesteads Roman Fort is free for English Heritage and National Trust members. Parking charges apply. The car park is managed by Northumberland National Park.

A large water storage tank (on the left of the picture) is in place so that there will always be water available to flush away waste. (Vote or comment on this photo)
