Misc. Earthwork in Shropshire

A small multivallate enclosure, possibly a hillfort or farmstead, lies just off Pave Lane. Virtually nothing of the site can be made out due to its inaccessibility. The only view of the site is from a small bridge crossing a stream. A gate leading to a neglected footpath was stuck shut and it would have been impossible to pass through without uprooting a large post. Despite nothing being visible on this visit part of the earthwork does survive and should be in the center of the photograph on the other side of the fence. In fact Archsearch reports that the earthwork used the natural features of the stream and gully to define its shape in this area. A large body of water, not shown on the OS map, appears to define the outside of the fort on its NW side.

Despite looking rather neglected the entire site is quite unusual for the area and has been excavated in the fairly recent past. Finds included a well preserved Iron Age cobbled surface, causeway entrance in the SW of the site and drip gullies inside the fort suggesting the existence of roundhouses.

Archsearch states: "The site is considered to be a good example of a comparatively rare site type in the West Midlands (where multi-ditched settlements are less common than single or double ditched ones), with preservation of significant buried deposits demonstrated."

An intriguing, if disappointing, visit. The condition of the public footpath here must be deplored and had it been more accessible a better view of the site would have been afforded.

The information on our page would tend to suggest otherwise but it is on private land so permission must be sought before visiting.

It is marked as scheduled monument on Historic England, List Entry Number:
      1020275

      https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1020275?section=official-list-entry

“ The enclosed farmstead was discovered during aerial reconnaissance, and it was the subject of a detailed archaeological investigation in 1990.”

I have walked the tarmac road next to the site and noted that the public footpath marked on the OS map is not there/not available. As said in the report, little of the historic settlement appears to be visible. I feel it is more interesting to read the archaeological report, and think about the context of Iron Age settlements in the local area.
The nearby Muster Hill was a gathering place in the Civil War, but again can only be viewed from the tarmac road, I was told by the local Gamekeeper.
