Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire

Located at the south western side of Hameldon Hill, this well is documented by The Journal of Antiquities's entry for the Mary Hoyle Well, Hyndburn Moor, Lancashire, which includes a photograph, directions for finding the well and background information. The Journal tells us: "There were numerous reports of healings caused by the well water, which was quite deep down in the ground beneath the slab and was never known to dry up, even in times of drought. At some point in the 1970s the large stone-slab, recorded as being over 90 inches long, 50 inches wide, and 7 inches thick, was badly damaged and cracked in two; today this slab is only half its original size". The Journal also includes a list of reference sources for more information.

Roy Chetham's History of Huncoat (scroll down to the Holy Wells box) adds: "O.S. Maps have always shown a feature on the south-west foot of Great Hameldon labelled May Road Well at a kink in the Huncoat boundary (NGR SD793284). This is an ancient holy well and is infact carved roughly with the words "Mary's Holy Well," although it has also been described as "Mary Hoyle Well." It is a natural spring covered by a 7 inch thick stone slab, 94 inches long and 51 inches across".

The well is also marked on the OS and HE maps, from which the grid reference was taken.
