Binghill submitted by hamilton : Binghill Stone Circle can scarcely be described as picturesque at the best of times. But when I visited it on the day of the Winter Solstice, 2010, and took this panoramic photograph at precisely noon under conditions of deep snow, it sparkled with life and character. Binghill submitted by golux : View looking E across the circle. The recumbent is on the right, with its moss-covered flankers lying beside it. The line of stones across the foreground indicates the size of the circle. The small stones beyond this line are kerbstones of the central court of the cairn which stood in the circle. The RCAHMS webpage makes all this clear with an excellent plan of the circle and the cairn.

Amy 'Small Adventures' writes: The three best stone circles in Aberdeenshire…
(…in my limited opinion!)

I’ve been to at least nine of the recumbent stone circles in Aberdeenshire and for me there are definitely three stand out favourites. These might not be the ‘cleanest’ examples of recumbent circles but they’re all circles that feel special to me. So, in no particular order, my favourite stone circles…so far!

There are two cairns nearby:
1. A cairn, which lies about 30m to the E of the recumbent stone circle, measures 10m in diameter and 0.3m in height; a hollow at its centre indicates a previous disturbance. (RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 26 February 1997)
2. Another cairn, to which the OS refer, is situated roughly 42m SSW of the recumbent stone circle. (RCAHMS (ATW) 9 February 2007)

No need to go cross-country over the fields, you can drive to within 100m. Head W out of Aberdeen on the A93. In Milltimber (within Aberdeen) turn right onto Binghill Road, take the 5th left onto The Meadows, then 6th right onto Oldfold Crescent. On the right between no.5 and no.6 is an opening to a path into the woods. Follow this path, first curving left round behind no.6, then turning right to go uphill, to a metal gate opening onto a track which runs from Contlaw Road to Binghill House. Cross the track and continue uphill. The circle is at the top of the slope, standing in front of the old drystane dyke bounding this woodland.

NB the OS map shows the circle at NJ 8550 0228, about 25m S of its true position.
