Tomleecee visited on 1st Jan 2012 I used to live in Hempsted and visited this site. There doesn't seem to be any of the original well workings inside the structure - it was just a stony floor and old crisp bags inside!

4clydesdale7 visited on 28th Aug 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Close to the W entrance of Hempsted Camp - even the Victorians were into graffiti carving messages inside

From Freya13
Early 14th Century well house made from Limestone, thought to be built for the Manor of Hempsted. The back of the well houses a stone sculpture of three figures that are now unfortunately worn. Believed to be St Anne, her daughter Mary and an Angel.

The well has been a site of pilgrimage, used as a baptistery, and the water considered to have healing properties

Lady's Well (Gloucestershire)
Lady's Well (Gloucestershire) submitted by rogerkread : A very pleasant well house with good views. Took some finding, but that was my fault for essentially having to rely on Google maps and a hazy memory of where it was from having looked at the OS map earlier. Easy enough if you take the amenity tip road and then the footpath on the left. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Clearly the Well-house, having been built at the same time as the local Hempsted Parish Church St Swithuns, is substantially predated by the very ancient well itself - a comparative inspection of the stone work of the Well-house and the lining of the Well shows that each was carried out at substantially different times - the well stands immediately beside the W entrance to Hempsted Roman Camp - the architecture of the well-house matches that of St Swithuns but the well is dedicated to St. Anne - it has an alternative name 'The Lady's Wash-house' - Pastscape website 115317
