Yet another of Gloucestershire's Ancient Camps causing much discussion and controversy - the renowned Rev. Samuel Lysons and G.B. Witts (Camp No.51) managed to agree that the rather indistinct defensive works are Roman but that is about all that any two experts are prepared to agree - there is a body of opinion that again (like Sodbury) there was an earlier Iron Age Camp on the site.

Standing to the South of Gloucester it is easily understood why the Romans built a Camp at Hempsted - it is close to the N end of the old roman road called 'The Portway' which ran from Glevum/Gloucester to Aquae Sulis/Bath (passing Sodbury Camp on the way).

It measures 250m by 100m, has 4 entrances (one on each side) and is approached from the N by a raised causeway from S.Gloucester. It is aligned N-S and is clearly divided into two separate halves (N & S) - it commands any approach to Gloucester from the S. It has a single ditch and bank (doubled in the North) and there is a raised causeway running from the S end of Gloucester to the W entrance which is by Lady's Well. Several Roman interments have been found within the site together numerous other Roman artefacts including horse bones.

The land upon which the Camp stands was part of the estate of the Llanthony Priory becoming in medieval times Llanthony Secunda - during their ownership the site was radically re-developed as a rabbit warren hence its later name 'The Coneygar'.
