Amberley Cross Bank
Amberley Cross Bank submitted by h_fenton : Amberley Cross Bank, viewed from roughly north. The bank comes to the bottom left corner of the photograph. Kite Aerial Photograph 16 August 2009 (Vote or comment on this photo)
A strong Iron Age rampart and ditch, this is one of the earliest earthworks on Minchinhampton Common - comparable in size to the Minchinhampton Bulwarks - these earthworks run from the N end of Amberley Camp SE for about 600m then turn a right angle to run from the E to the SW for 600m thereby enclosing the Amberley (Camp) and Pinfarthing Enclosures

The earthworks are 25m wide - the rampart 10m wide and 1.5m high - the ditch being 7m wide and 2m deep

further detail is on the pastscape website 115082 - it is thought that the area contains upwards of 700 Iron Age pit dwellings
