Crookbarrow Hill
Crookbarrow Hill submitted by RaulRobbo : Another picture of Crookbarrow hill in Worcestershire. As you can see with the farm near the tump. It is very big. See the following for more info http://www.sciasitis.org.uk/art22.htm (Vote or comment on this photo)
Archaeologists disagree as to whether this tump in Worcestershire is natural or artificial - perhaps a massive burial mound. What is certain, however, is that it has been a focus of attention for thousands of years. The site has never been excavated, but prehistoric flints and Roman coins have been found. As you can see from this photo with the farm near the tump, it is very big.

Did some work on this a while ago - a brief walkover and some desk-based queries. As I recall the emerging verdict was a much-enhanced natural feature whose prominence had been realised over a long period.
Any prehistoric detail on the top has been lost to WW2 structures. But no definitive excavations...

BBC Radio 4 Open Country visit Crookbarrow Hill by Andy B on Wednesday, 04 December 2019

One Tree Hill: a famous landmark that connects us emotionally and confounds us archaeologically.

Otherwise known as Crookbarrow Hill or Whittington Tump it's instantly recognisable to anyone driving near junction 7 of the M5, the exit for Worcester. For generations this distinctive hill, with a solitary tree on top, has become a symbol of homecoming, an emotional way-marker. But ask around and nobody seems to know much about it. It's a Scheduled Monument, on private land inaccessible to the public, and it's never been excavated. However there are enough clues to warrant some educated speculation. So, for Open Country, Karen Gregor climbs the Tump with three local experts to pick their brains.

She also speaks to Henry Berkeley who owns the Spetchley Estate on which the hill stands, and to locals who have personal stories to tell about it.

Adam Mindykowski - Historic Environment Advisor for Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service.
Wendy Carter and Harry Green - Worcestershire Wildlife Trust
Henry Berkeley - Spetchley Park Gardens and Estate

Is it possible to walk up the tump?

One theory is that this feature was actually a Roman beacon site.
Some radar surveys carried out found the top of the tump had a stone base.
