Anne T visited on 12th Sep 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Mounthooly Enclosed Scooped Settlement, College Valley: We drove down the road as far as we could go, nearly at Mounthooly Farm and International Hostelry, and there was a big sign saying ‘no cars past this point’. There were two other cars parked on the grass verge, but no signs of other people. The road had been gated at Fleehope farm, where they were taking out the whole of the forest by Fleehope Burn, to the west of the farmhouse, and there were huge piles of logs and heavy machinery. Whoever had parked the Land Rover on about a 45 degree slope near the forest had to be congratulated for an epic display of 4 wheel driving! We walked along the track past Mounthooly Farm and the Hostelry (which has a clean toilet block!), past the narrow strip of forest and found the footpath making its way through the sheep pens, through the field, by a hide. Immediately after coming through the sheep folds, the scoop of the settlement came into view. Standing towards the western end of the settlement, the scoop is cut deep into the hillside and it seemed to loom around 5+ metres above me, although both Pastscape and Historic England say it’s only 3 metres. The farmer has been using this area as a dump, and there were no end of empty plastic feed supplement bags and bottles. There was a clear, wide ditch to the west and south of the settlement; it’s northern end had been cut by the forestry plantation and fence. My eye was drawn across to the eastern side of College Burn, and a large light coloured boulder. When we got home, it turned out that there was another larger settlement, field systems and cairnfields to the east of the burn. There was also another settlement to the south east of the field, but there was a very large herd of bullocks gathered, so we opted out on this occasion. What a fascinating area. Needs much more investigation.

Ancient Village or Settlement in Northumberland

This Romano-British scooped settlement lies some 150 metres south of Mounthooly International Hostel/Bunkhouse, on the eastern slopes of The Schil and approx. 100 metres west of College Burn.

The settlement is sub-circular, measures approx. 50 metres in diameter, with opposing entrances on the eastern side, and is recorded as both Pastscape Monument No. 943 and Historic England List ID 1015647.

The most recent entry on the Pastscape record reads: "The site comprises a large sub-circular scooped settlement 52m in diameter overall, and defended by two concentric stone ramparts. The ramparts, which display some large boulder facing stones, have a maximum width of 5.2m and a maximum height of 0.6m. An interval on average 3m wide exists between the two ramparts. Opposing entrances exist in the E ramparts, the inner 2.1m wide, and the outer 2.9m. The interior is scooped on its W side to a depth of 3.6m below the ground surface creating a relatively level interior. A platform 0.7m high has retained in the N segment of the site upon which are located two shallow depressions no more than 0.4m deep and 5m in diameter, which must represent ephemeral evidence of house structures. A fragmentary arc of walling 1.3m wide and 0.3m high immediately N of the entrance may be the remains of a third house. A scarp and bank 1.6m wide and 0.4m high runs roughly E-W across the interior almost bisecting it, and could be the remains of a sub-division. A hollow way 6m wide and 0.3m in depth runs from the entrance SE towards the College Burn, leading between a series of contemporary or earlier cultivation terraces (see NT 82 SE 13). Part of the N enclosure walls of this site are now overlain by a modern plantation."

Mounthooly (College Valley) submitted by Anne T : Photograph trying to illustrate how deeply the western (back) end of the settlement is cut into the slope. Historic England says it has been cut into the hillside some 3.6 metres to create a level surface. Standing below this bank, it certainly towered above me! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Mounthooly (College Valley) submitted by Anne T : Towards the eastern bank of the settlement there are small clumps of stones, perhaps the remains of one of two prehistoric buildings Historic England say are within this settlement.
