Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Northumberland
This natural sandstone outcrop, marked on the OS map, lies deep in the Otterburn Ranges at the junction of two military roads, one running east towards Holystone, the other runs northwards and is marked as a dead end. It has great views over to Coquetdale and Alwinton to the north and east. From the road it looks just like a large flat-topped outcrop, but walking down the lane to its southern side, it quickly starts to look like a bird's head with a truncated beak, these features presumably eroded over the years along natural cracks and weaknesses in the rock.
It is clearly a favourite spot with the army, judging by the shell casings scattered about its base.
A friend from the local archaeology group's blog mentions that this stone is listed (together with 100 others) as one of the named stones in the Berwick region in a 19th paper by G.A. Lebour, Professor of Geology, University of Durham College of Physical Science.
This paper describes the Crow Stone as an old parish boundary. It also lists all the old wayside crosses with their positions in latitude/longitude.
