Marko visited on 16th Feb 2014 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Busy with walkers and dogs so hard to capture the true ambience! Walked the inner ditch on SE and SW sides.Massive inner rampart No ditch or rampart on other two sides due to it being a 'promontary fort' Therefore due to the terrain,no defences were needed at the NW and NE sides.

Promontory fort in Staffordshire. A fine Iron Age promontary fort on the summit of Kinver Edge. The fort was defended by the natural steepnees of the Edge on all sides but the SE and SW. Here it is defended by an impressive bank and ditch.

The Giant's Well (Kinver)
The Giant's Well (Kinver) submitted by TimPrevett : The pathetic remains of The Giant's Well on the corner of Heather Drive and Stone Lane resemble a rusted iron urinal and ruined barbeque surround. In 2000 there were moves to have it renovated, but the effort and expense (something like £50,000) were deemed too excessive. The Giant's Well links in with the folklore of the nearby Rock Shelters, Kinver Edge, and the long destroyed Boltstone, which ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kinver Edge is a remnant of the Mercian forest, although much planting dates from post-1945. There are two Iron Age hillforts on Kinver Edge the larger one Kinver Edge Hillfort, is at the northern end, while the other is at the southern end, on a promontory known as Drakelow Hill. Kinver Edge Hillfort is a univallate Iron Age hillfort with a massive rampart and outer ditch along the south-west and south-east sides, with natural defences on the remaining sides. The area has been a popular local tourist destination since Edwardian times, when an electric tramway, the Kinver Light Railway, connected Kinver to the Birmingham tram system. Kinver Edge is home to the last troglodyte dwellings occupied in England, with a set of complete cave-houses excavated into the local sandstone. One of the rocks, "Holy Austin", was a hermitage until the Reformation. The Holy Austin rock houses were inhabited until the 1960s. One house has been restored to a Victorian appearance, and the Martindale Caves show what life was like in the 1930s.

Visited on 16 February 2014.

Perhaps it was because it was the warmest day of the year but the place was packed with walkers and dogs!

The bracken was very low, therefore giving good views from the ditch of the massive single rampart on the SE and SW sides.
