This is very small, but beautiful, recumbent stone circle. It is situated on a hill in Strichen Community Park and it quite easy to reach, although not well signposted!

When it was excavated, fragments of white quartz were found scattered within the circle. Well worth a visit.

Re: Strichen House's restoration by AngieLake on Friday, 06 November 2015

Just checking out the history of recumbent circles and found this on Wikipedia:

"The circle at Strichen provided a unique opportunity to test how the recumbents might have been transported. It was incorrectly restored in the 19th century by Lord Lovat, so between 1979–83 it was fully excavated and correctly restored by a team led by Burl, Ian Hampsher-Monk and Philip Abramson. The restoration required the team to move some of the stones, and it was found that the most efficient non-mechanical means of doing so was to use drag the stones along a slippery path of wet straw using logs as a kind of sledge."

Re: Strichen House and Dr Johnson's visit in 1773 by AngieLake on Friday, 06 November 2015

In 'A Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson' James Boswell writes about a visit to this circle in 1773:
(Wednesday, 25th August)
"We set out about nine. Dr Johnson was curious to see one of those structures which northern antiquarians call a Druid's temple. I had a recollection of one at Strichen; which I had seen fifteen years ago; so we went four miles out of our road, after passing Old Deer, and went thither. Mr Fraser, the proprietor, was at home, and shewed it to us. But I had augmented it in my mind; for all that remains is two stones set up on end, with a long one laid upon them, as was usual, and one stone at a little distance from them. That stone was the capital one of the circle which surrounded what now remains."
(They had left Slains Castle that morning and at night arrived at Banff.)

Rather curious that Boswell says "two stones set up on end, with a long one LAID UPON THEM, as was usual" ..??
(Sorry, haven't researched these circles to know if they were intended to be like this, and 'recumbents' have since fallen to the ground between the uprights.)

I guess this is where you're meant to park for access to the circle, on Street View

Was there a couple of weeks ago, was a bit perturbed by the 'guardian bulls' in close prox to the circle, with not a lot of fencing between them (plural) & me.
By the marks in the grass though on the path on way out it looked like there'd been visitors, so the site's not totally forgotten.

Visited this circle today in the pouring rain! Well worth a visit though.

The circle is located on a hill up a footpath 700m from the road.

Excellent circle, well worth visiting. Now well signposted as part of the 'Stone Circle Trail' with parking and dedicated footpath.
