Moking Cave submitted by durhamnature : Early explorers in Moking Cave, from Archive.org Site in County Durham England (Vote or comment on this photo)
One of the most important cave archaeology finds in the region. Particularly important for the range of wild animal species found in the debris, particularly lynx. Human remains, of bronze or iron age, are sparse.

Site number D466

The cave is high on the hillside, looking south over the upper Tees dale towards the cliffs of Falcon Clints and Cronkley Scar.

It was explored in 1880 by the renowned naturalist and Quaker J Backhouse of Darlington.

There is a plan of the caves in "Northern Caves" 1988 D Brook.

A one kilometer steep walk up the hill through Underhurth Farm, from whom access permission is needed. Basic caving skills are needed, to go beyond the entrance area.
