Hillfort in Staffordshire

This hillfort is squeezed between the A34 and A51 just north of the town of Stone (town name coming from events in the Anglo-Saxon period).

Two embankments sit within a wooded hilltop, heavily overgrown in the summer. The ramparts do not really have a ditch, so one wonders if it was constructed that way, or the ditches have filled in. Suspect the former, as could find no evidence of ditches.

Appears to be no access, but having called on the neighbouring farm, two farmers informed me that it is forestry commission run, and that lots of folk visit and walk their dogs up there anyhow. They recommended I enter the site on the SW side through a disused quarry recessed in the woods, and following the track from there.

A beautiful, remote feeling spot (even with the A34 beneath!), buzzing with life in spring and summer.

A denuded round barrow sits at the highest part of the fort.

Bury Bank (Staffordshire)
Bury Bank (Staffordshire) submitted by TimPrevett : Bury Bank how most see it - or not. Veiled in these trees, A34 dual carriageway whizzing past, River Trent to my rear, here is the hillfort. There is so much to our landscape, yet to most it is veiled - unless you are seeking. Waiting for the bus can be so much more than fiddling with your phone :o) (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bury Bank (Staffordshire) submitted by TimPrevett : A composite of 6 shots taken across the interior of the fort, looking south from just inside the northern rampart. The central ring of trees pretty much defines the central area of the fort. This is a great spot, and the hour I had here was a very happy time. Most pleasing. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Accessed via footpath to the side of Bury Bank farm, which led to the quarry.A short walk uphill and the negotiation of a lowish barbed wire fence leads you into the west side of the hillfort.

Best remains of the two embankments and terrace are on the NW side.

Parts of the interior were already becoming overgrown when i visited on 22 March 2014,so would suggest visiting in Winter or early Spring.

As an asside, there are some lovely, weird shaped trees growing on the North inner rampart.

Bury Bank is a fantastic site along with Saxons Lowe in the next field. The land owner is a family friend and has kindly granted me permission to use my metal detector all on this land. Will keep you posted on my finds. :-)

A great place, hidden from everyone, people drive past it every day without realising its there, a gem, But we could not access it properly as it was heavily fenced off.

I was speaking to a local about this when I visited another site nearby. Apparently, when they were boys they used to go play in this hill fort all the time. They had no idea about the history at the time and used to play games which ....coincidentally...involved building 'forts'. To this end they used to dig little ditches.....and in those ditches they found old rusty swords. They even used to play with them. Its only looking back now that the man realized what exactly he'd been playing with!!

For several years I have occassionally passed this site, aware that a hillfort sat above as I whizzed past on the A34. Two days of work nearby sealed my visit. On the first day, I noticed bluebells through the trees as I went past on the bus... that night I planned my visit. Set off extra early for work the next day, and even found out that the bus route stops at the bottom of it! It was magic. Spent well over an hour imbibing the spring atmosphere (bugs, trees, bluebells, dear) with hot sunshine early in the day. I didn't want to leave. Blissful solitude with the echoes of people long gone.
