Ancient Cross in Staffordshire

Broken shaft of an Anglo Saxon Cross dating from the early history of a church on this site, with interlace designs, in the churchyard of Stoke Minster. Cross shaft is within metal railings, but easy to see on a visit, access from Glebe Street.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this cross - see their entry for St. Peter’s Cross, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, which gives directions for finding this site, together with a drawing of the carved cross shaft and a brief archaeology & history. TNA adds: "Sadly the shaft is quite badly eroded with the carvings on one side being difficult to make out, but the front face has interlacing and scroll-work; there is some key-patterning on the sides and reverse side along with a series or section of small holes – these perhaps done in more recent times. The break across the middle of the shaft can still be seen today, but that does not detract from its great antiquity, the ancient monument being carefully restored."

The cross is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 75813, the summary of which reads: "Anglo-Scandinavian cross fragments located in St Peter's churchyard. Re-erected in the mid 19th century." The Pastscape record also includes a description and photographs.

This cross is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1195794, which adds: "Fragment of Anglo-Saxon cross. Stone. Identified by Charles Lynam and re-erected by him in mid C19. Tooled base and surrounding railings are mid C19, and the shaft itself, which is some 4 ft high, is enriched with interlace and key patterns."
