In the church of St Peter at East Marton there is an Anglo-Norse cross shaft dating from the 10th-11th century. Four fragments (which are made from Knaresborough stone) make up the shaft which is ornately carved with what are thought to be scenes depicting Thor, the Norse god of thunder. He carries his hammer and seems to be tangled-up with the earth serpent and other beasts; the coiled interlacing goes around all the four faces of the fragments.

These cross fragments were apparently discovered at St Helen's Hill near the River Wharfe. For a time they were housed at Scriven Park, but were given as a gift to St Peter's by a member of the family there. The church stands on some earlier earthworks. The font is Norman and has some carvings and is supported by three round stones and another stone which may have once been a grindstone.
