standing stone in Cheshire

This stone is located SJ905636 on the back slope of Bosley Cloud, a hill in Cheshire. It is not known if this stone is prehistoric standing stone or a natural boulder but it has been utilised as a marker (a cross is carved into the top of the stone) for the Cheshire/Staffordshire county boundary which splits the Cloud. If it is natural it is fortuitously placed but it is a stone out of keeping with those in the immediate area.

A track runs right beside it.

This is a couple minutes down from the trig point, and the views up here are superb - to the Berwyns and Clwydian ranges, SE Staffordshire (look for the plumes of steam from Rugeley Power Station), to Manchester, Shropshire. This stone is a boundary marker on the Cheshire/Staffordshire border. There are 2 more in the line from here to the furthest one near the Bride Stones in a small alcove in the garden wall. The third one has been broken and is lying on its side roughly half way between the two.

This arguable standing stone south from the trig point has been damaged; there is a wide track way developing to its west (the original path to the east immediately adjacent the wall); on its shoulder there is a sizeable chunk exposing 'raw' rock.
August 7th 2003.
