Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross
Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross submitted by astronomer : This remnant stands about 1m high. It clearly illustrates the tapered cylindrical shaft (the lower portion of which may now form the base of a sundial at Adlington Hall), the double collar and the lower portion of the tapered square section with its 'swags'. Ancient Cross in Cheshire

Adlington Hall's pre-Norman cross is located in a small grove of trees on a low prominence overlooking the park about 1km south of the hall. It is on private land but is best approached along a footpath from Bonis Hall Lane, Prestbury.

This is one of about two dozen so-called 'Mercian' crosses that are found running southwards down the 'Lyme', an ancient frontier joining the headwaters of the rivers Mersey and Trent before swinging eastwards, roughly following the Trent, towards Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. Two exceptions are Eliseg's Pillar at Llangollen, and a similar shaft at Beckermet, Cumbria.

These stone shafts are all of similar design, a tapered cylindrical shaft surmounted by a single or double collar that separates a square section tapered upper part. Ornamentation is variable and can be elaborate but the tapered section is usually characterized by sculpted 'swags' defining the corners of the square portion. It is thought that they may once have had small 'top-knot' crosses perched on top but none survive intact.

Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross
Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross submitted by astronomer : Situated in the grounds of Adlington Hall, adjacent to the 'Cottage', is this lower portion of another pre-Norman 'Mercian' cross chopped off at the collar. It stands about 5ft high in a square stone base and bears all the hallmarks of those elsewhere in the Lyme. It is not the lower portion of the other Adlington cross previously described. Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross
Adlington Hall pre-Norman cross submitted by astronomer : The distribution of the Mercian crosses is particularly concentrated in the Macclesfield - Leek area of the Lyme but clearly extends from Glossop down to Leek before swinging south and eastwards towards Nottingham. It is suggested (Kilburn 2010) that they may mark the western and southern edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, the westernmost of the seven boroughs of Danish Mercia (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)
