Tunshill Tolmen
Tunshill Tolmen submitted by jumping-buddha : Tunshill Tolmen. Tolmen or gatepost? I'm no expert...there's a thousand and one objects like this in Yorkshire...but equally i guess many gateposts could also be re-used Tolmens.... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Before the days of "Rawlplugs" if you needed to fix a round something ( iron gate hinge or pivot)into a stone block, you cut a squared hole in it filled it with molten lead and inserted the heated hingepin or whatever.
The Romans did it and I remember seeing it done 50 odd years ago on a farm in Dartmoor!
I go for the recent stone/gatepost theory!

All the best
Pete

Looks like a gatepost to me. Tolmen holes are usually big enough to pass something through, as in a potential healing type function. Nope, doesn't convince me I'm afraid.

I'm with you Andy. Another difficulty I have with the hole is that it looks sort of squared, and not just round. As if it was to prevent something turning within it.

It's not just the hole that looks wrong, the whole thing looks very recent, cleanly cut & unweathered.
