Lady Godiva's Cross
Lady Godiva's Cross submitted by TimPrevett : The remains of the cross shaft, with steps dating to around 1050, attributed to the instruction of Lady Godiva. This is on the south side of the church. The relatively more recent cross base and even later cross at the western end of the churchyard were originally on top of Godiva's Cross, and their maintenance yielded the discovery of the earlier cross base and partial shaft beneath. Ancient Cross in West Midlands

An early mediaeval stepped cross base, linked with Lady Godiva, in the south of the churchyard of St Bartholomew's, Penn. A later mediaeval cross, which was once on top of the earlier mount, is now reconstructed to the west of the church building.

Re: Lady Godiva's Cross by Anonymous on Thursday, 14 February 2019
I am a Penn, and when I was doing genealogical research, Lady Godiva came up as Godiva Attapenn, that being her family name, which later became Penn. I found this cross mention rather exciting.

I have a photo of two Penns from the 1870's, a man and I assume his daughter, some relation of Anne Nelson Walsh Penn, taken at a photographer's in Margate. Perhaps an uncle and cousin of my grandmother. She did have an uncle who had emigrated to Kokomo, Indiana and she herself moved there in 1924 with my grandfather, William Genders, my father and my uncle.

The stepped base here, reminds me of the the base at Trentham near Stoke on Trent.
