The barrow is situated in a prominent position on the top of Nab Head (hence the trig point) overlooking the east Cheshire town of Bollington. The now vandalised barrow has 360 degree views across the Cheshire Plain to the Berwyn and Clwydian Hills, across south Manchester to Lancashire and east to the foothills of the Pennines taking in Windgather Rocks, Macclesfield Forest and Croker Hill. A visit is highly recommended.
As for the mound itself, although scheduled it has been damaged by stone quarrying and the erection of an Ordnance Survey trig point. In 1960 it was said to be 40 feet in diameter with an external ditch 90 feet in diameter and one foot deep, but by 1964 all traces of this had vanished.
Access
Nab Head is easy to reach as access to the summit has been formalised recently. As a result the public right of way is only marked on the ‘new’ Explorer series OS map (number 268).
There is only one way to get to the barrow. If you are driving parking is available on Cockshead Hey Road (off Shrigley Road at the Bollington end). The path can be followed through Cockshead Hey Farm (it is sign-posted and there are a couple of stiles) up the slope for 600m until you reach the stone pillar that marks the high point of the hill. The damaged barrow surrounds the pillar.
