Clulow Cross
Clulow Cross submitted by vicky : Clulow Cross - possibly a prehistoric round barrow surmounted by a more recent cross. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow in Cheshire

The broken millstone grit pillar of Clulow Cross stands about 10 feet high on a large conical mound which some, including Sainter, believed to be an enormous tumulus: ‘This wayside cross, once so common, is placed upon the summit of an artificial mound of earth…This mound, or tumulus, is 250 feet in diameter, 25 feet high’.

Access

Clulow Cross (or Cleulow) stands in a small plantation at the junction of the A54 Congleton to Buxton Road and the minor crossroads leading to Sutton (GR: SJ953672). There is no formal access but it can easily be seen from the road.

Clulow Cross
Clulow Cross submitted by Simon : Clulow Cross in the mist. With the camera on a tripod I groped my way round to the other side of the mound with my flashgun in utter darkness and fired off about twenty flashes, using them to both illuminate the mist and thereby silhouette the cross, and to light up the trees, giving them a feeling that they are reaching over the pillar. Well, if you use a bit of imagination anyway... Picture ... (6 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Clulow Cross
Clulow Cross submitted by Simon : Clulow Cross at night Taking a picture of the cross during the day either gives a silhouette or the rather unnatural effect given by fill-in flash. So I went the whole hog and took it at night, so it was completely unnatural anyway! As can be seen, several flashes were used, some for the cross and some for the trees. Picture taken on 27th June 1985. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Clulow Cross
Clulow Cross submitted by MaccMan : This picture of the hump that the cross sits on was taken looking down from the high road above the cross. I took this photo in winter to show the shape of the hump, which Sainter thought was a tumulus: I think it is most likely a nature hump. I cannot see any evidence for the other things that Sainter reported nearby. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Clulow Cross
Clulow Cross submitted by TimPrevett : Anglo-Saxon high cross known locally as a late Mercian round shaft. Built on an earlier barrow, it has a large base and the shaft is topped with the remains of a small wheel head cross. Clulow Cross is on top of an unmissable mound above the road. On Christmas Day 1999, the day was as dark and menacing as the picture hints and the wind was absolutely penetrating! (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)
