No sign of wooden gates or fence now and it’s partner..? Ex gatepost is now fallen flat and sinking into the mire!

Is there any evidence this is a stone shaped by man? If so, in what period? Thanks.

When visiting Gun Hill a grisly event in its history recorded in the papers and books of Plot, Sleigh & Miller is worth thinking about. It was the trial and execution of John Naden in 1732. Naden had been found guilty at a court in Stafford, of murdering his employer, Robert Brough of Whitelee Farm, Swythamley. He was held on the night prior to his execution at The Cock Inn at Leek, which then occupied a site at the top corner of the Market Place. It is recorded there was a lot of drinking and singing. Then the next day he was taken to Gun-Ridge preceded by choirs from several local churches and hanged and gibbeted somewhere near to the packhorse road. Naden’s bones dropped piece-meal from the chains and never received burial. Nice!

I think this standing stone has had a previous life as something else; it has a very squared off base, making me think of a cross shaft.

Visited on 30th. August 2005. At the exact lat/long given, which is some distance off the path to the right, (before the stone is reached) is a large (20-30 yard) circular patch of trampled heather! A number of feet have maybe been treading around trying to find the stone!

At the path entrance, note the two large stones, which have evidently been used as gateposts in the distant past. Old rusty hinges have been affixed with lead. These stones look "un-natural" and I wonder if they were once part of some destroyed structure in this immediate area. Note also the collection of large stones to the immediate right of the path a little way from the stile.

The stone itself is not easy to spot until nearly reached and is a fair way up the path! Don't give up too soon! The weathered top is cracked and reveals the sandy nature of the stone, typical of that in the Leek area. I noticed that the rough sides of the stone seemed aligned on the distant Bosley Cloud on the horizon which is a very prominant marker.

I'll post exact lat & long. when I've downloaded the fix from the GPS.

To find this stone by car, leave the village of Meerbrook and head up the hill towards Rushton Spencer. At the brow of the hill, park in the lay-by on the left. Across the road, climb the stile and follow the footpath towards the trig point.

The stone is on the right, just off the path, surrounded by heather. It is a shapely little stone, with erosion on the top. When I drew it, I was struck by how similar it looks to a human torso - it almost seems to have a waist.

It is a beautiful, breezy spot with great views of the surrounding countryside. I don't know why it is called Gun Hill, but the whole time I was there I could hear guns being fired and dogs barking madly in response, which added to the slightly surreal, haunting atmosphere.

It is worth a walk up to the trig point for more long-range views. As I walked back towards the stone and looked at it from a distance, it seemed to highlight and echo the shape of a mound or hill some miles away, which appeared from this angle to be directly behind it. Gun Hill is a wonderful place which feels ancient and magical. Thankyou for drawing my attention to it.
