It is very easy to understand how your previous correspondents became somewhat bemused by the term 'Daniel's Well' - on a short visit recently I discovered the same confusion whenever I sought clarification from locals including Dog Walkers, Courting Couples, Fishermen, Mothers (with buggies) exercising Children, Churchwardens, Local Residents whose houses also have wells on site, Landlords, a Local Historian and Staff at the Local Museum -

There are most definitely two sites enjoying the same name and they are less than 100m apart, one overlooking the other - the 'real site' on the slope of a small hill south of the river is now essentially derelict - a Wellhead shows just above ground and is surrounded by 30mx30m of concrete (to save us all falling into tanking - 1930s style) - the impostor is a beautiful pool on the River Avon just below the town weir - throw in a visit to Malmesbury Abbey and you have a lovely afternoon

I am reliably told today, 20/07/06, that Daniel's Well is now no more than just a name for that area and that there is no specific well to be seen. I must go there again and see this concrete slab cover, which so far has eluded me.

The well is marked on the OS maps of the area. It is now no more than a solid concrete cover in the middle of a field that seals this shaft well. Not a lot to see, and precious little ambience!

The well is actually dedicated to Daniel, the Bishop of Winchester 705-44CE who came to Malmesbury Abbey as a monk or the Abbot depending on which source you refer to.

According to William of Malmesbury:

"That he [Daniel] might reduce the force of his rebelious body, he used to immerse himself up to the shoulders in a spring near to the monastery. There, caring neither for the frosty rigour of the winter nor the mists rising from the marshy ground in summer, he used to pass the night unharmed."
More recently, this holy well has been used for the more mundane purpose of washing clothes
