Marischal Museum
Marischal Museum submitted by cosmic : The impressive frontage of Marischal College - one of longest granite facades in the world. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Former museum in Aberdeen. The replacement is the King's Museum which doesn't have the same quantity of prehistoric objects on display. For this reason we've kept this page open to show some of the items that were on display - and are now sadly in storage.

They have a new virtual entry point at www.abdn.ac.uk/museums, allowing look up of individual items, searching by object type, location or key words. More than 125,000 items have been added to the on-line database from collections held at Marischal Museum, the Zoology Museum, the Anatomy Museum, Geology collection, the Herbarium, Scientific Instrument collection and Pathology and Forensic Medicine collection.

Some suggested searches are carved stones, pictish stones or picts, beaker, axehead, carved stone ball.

Note: Our designation of 'destroyed' is to indicate that the museum is not there any more - clearly the building and collections still exist - albeit not all on display!

The excitement of viewing Marisichal museum over 20 years ago remains with me . What a shame it has been moth-balled to satisfy current notions of Progress.

My father used to take me and my siblings to this museum regularly - in the 1970s.
And sometimes climb the Mitchell tower, which was an adventure!

One of the best museums I’ve ever known. Superb exhibits, well chosen, and beautifully presented. I remember the Tibetan prayer wheel, the Chinese bound foot in formaldehyde, the opium smoking kit, the fantastic carved canoe with no metal nails, but all wooden butterfly joints, the life-sized outline of the blue whale on the ceiling. Superb. We will not see it’s like again.

Regrat to report that the museum is currently closed while efforts are made to find a new site for it at the University of Aberdeen main complex at King's College.

The Marischal College site (with the second longest granite frontage in Europe) has been leased to Aberdeen City Council for its new headquarters building. Hopefully their current headquarters ( a grotesque multistorey office block which stands across the road from Marischal college) while be demolished in due course.
