Ancient Village or Settlement in Lancashire

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this now destroyed settlement - see their entry for Werneth Low, Hyde, Lancashire which they have identified from the place name (Werneth) which has been in use since at least the 12th century.

TNA adds: "Many mesolithic flint finds and old stone axes have been found around the area, but it seems primarily to have developed into a neolithic and Bronze Age settlement and burial site. A number of cairns were once here, and both rounded and linear earthwork features occur in the area; but there’s been considerable disturbance in and around the site and without in-depth archaeo-surveillance, much remains hidden."

Note: Do you have any information about this settlement or the finds in the area? If so, please post a comment below. Thank you.

Re: Werneth Low (Hyde) by Anonymous on Friday, 14 June 2019
I have lived near Werneth Low for a long time and in the past I have heard mention of an area of land known as Spring Woods. When I have asked no-one seems to have heard of them. Can anyone give me any information as to whether they exist and if so their location?

My interest stems from a tale I once heard about the ghost of a Druid having been seen there. I also remember being told the story of a farmer hearing the sound of Roman soldiers and and the sounds of horses and chariots in the fields beside the long path that runs down from Apple Street to Botham's Farm, which at one time was known as London Road.

I would appreciate any information on an area that I walk and have a great deal of affection for.

Spring Wood is between Springwood Farm and Cowlishaw Farm. A useful website is Cheshire Tithe Maps Online where you can view the present OS map and historic maps alongside each other.

Thanks for this comment. The Northern Antiquarian records Hyde as being in Lancashire. Wikipedia and other sources say Hyde was historically in Cheshire, but in 1974 became part of Greater Manchester. I've amended the county accordingly. If you have any more information or details about this site, we'd be delighted to hear. Thank you!

In terms of governance, Hyde is in Tameside, which is one of the 10 boroughs which make up greater Manchester. Ceremonially it remains in Cheshire, and has a Stockport (SK) postcode. Stockport is also historically Cheshire, but is also one of the 10 boroughs.
In the case of Stockport nobody ever questions its Cheshire status, regardless of boundary and governance issues, but with Hyde it's always referred to as greater Manchester. It's certainly never been Lancashire though, regardless of whether Manchester itself is.
