Cheltenham Centre Stone submitted by mattchapman : The Victorian market entrance. (courtesy of cheltonia) (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Center Stone was originally a stone at the entrance to Cheltenham Market . From which, much like to London stone, all distance's in the area were measured.

The stone its self vanished long ago and a Victorian print show a Gothic entrance way to the market which had the legend "Center stone " worked into it. When this was demolished and Bennigton street pushed through to the high street ,parts of the decoration were incorporated into a stone plaque that now resides above the junction on the corner of Hinds the Jewelers(as of 2016).

Maps in the Cheltenham museum show the Victorian market and its lay out and one from about 1830 if I remember correctly, still shows distances as measured from that spot.

Found at the junction of Bennington Street and the high street on Hinds the jewelers.
