Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Wiltshire

Now a rather quaint example of Victoriana, this drinking fountain is covered with a wood and slate conical roof. Written in gothic script around the roof lintel is a verse of rhyme (see below). Given it's location on the intersection of roads leading from (to?) Devizes, Chippenham and Calne this spring is likely to have been used for very many centuries.

The verse reads:

Here quench your thirst and make in me
An emblem of true charity,
Who why my Bounty bestow,
Am neither heard nor seen to flow.
Repaid by fresh supplies from Heaven,
For every cup of water give.

This well had been concreted over sometime before the late 60s when I first saw it.

Went to the church through the 'Golden Gates' in 2007, looking for my Cole ancestors. Wish I'd known about this lovely little well then. Bowood House is worth a visit if you're here!

The original well house was provided at the end of the 1800s by the Poynder family, who also supplied well houses at Biddestone, Colerne, and Hilmarton. The well house was repaired in 2002-2003. (Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust, 1967-2007, pg.29 Available here).

This well is conveniently visible from the road and there is a bus stop closeby so it is easy to stop and have a look. It was dry when I visited, but very pretty with bluebells and spring flowers around it. Worth taking a moment to say hello, it is charming.
