Ludworth Intake submitted by vicky : The Ludworth intake round barrow near Marple in Cheshire. See main site entry for further details. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow in Greater Manchester (Stockport)

This cairn is marked on the OS Map at GR: SJ98989131 and is only 430m north-north-east of Brown Low. It is crossed by a drystone wall and can be viewed from the nearby footpath. The cairn has been quarried exposing the stone core - to the west of the wall it looks more like a trench but to the east it is more of a crater. Extensive views look across to the hills in the east and west down to Brown Low, which would have been visible from here before forestation.

Note: Please note this barrow is located on private land but can be easily viewed from the nearby public footpath.

From Pastscape:

"A large barrow at Ludworth Intakes was destroyed by 'treasure-
hunters' when it became known it was to be excavated. According to
information volunteered, ashes, bones, etc. were found and also a
cinerary urn which was broken and its contents lost. The barrow was
alleged to have been divided into three paralled circles one within
the other, the centre one containing the urn.

A largely turf-covered cairn, diameter about 20.0m., height about
2.0m. It has been severely mutilated in the centre.

A round cairn, about 1.8m. in height and approximately 28.0m. in
diameter. No trace of a ditch exists.
There are traces of an excavation but the mound appears to be mainly
undisturbed. Scheduled both in Derbyshire and Greater Manchester
County.

SJ 9897 9131. Cairn on Ludworth Intakes. Scheduled RSM No. 23319.
The cairn is irregularly shaped and grass-covered, measuring c.25m N-
S by 15.5m E-W and standing c.1.5m high. The irregularity of the
cairn is due to antiquarian digging as noted by Marriott and past
land use."

My first post to this excellent site. I visited Brown Low and the Ludworth Intake barrow yesterday (Sunday 15th August 2004) and have two observations.

Firstly by pure coincidence I was recently re-reading Julian Cope's "The Modern Antiquarian". It struck me forcibly that Harrop Edge, as viewed to the north from this site, seems to fit very well his description and examples of a "recumbent mother figure" or "sacred hill" (see Chapter 7).

Secondly, in a field 200m ENE of the barrow (more or less on the line of the public footpath from Upper Chisworth, approx. SJ99179137) I noticed four or five (admittedly smallish) stones in an approximately circular configuration protruding from the grass. I can't find any reference to these elsewhere on this site but I did wonder whether they might be the remains of a stone circle? I'm no expert so shoot me down in flames if I'm letting my imagination run away with me.

I'll upload a photograph that shows both these features; in case that doesn't work the same picture can be viewed at http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/davedunford/PICT0015-reduced.jpg.

Yeah, this is 7 years late, but in the scheme of things that's pretty recent.

It is possible that a stone circle existed there. The surviving sites are poorly documented - Shaw Cairn turned up all kinds of surprises when the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit actually studied it, so you should expect surprises elsewhere.

Rocks that are oddly positioned could also be the remains of a ring barrow.

With the Mellor Trust focusing more on industrial history (for now), the best advice I can give is to document any and all unusual sites in the region.
