As the third stop on our short circular walk to the east of Kirkwhelpington, this was a nice site to stop and look at. Easier to see the layout from the aerial photographs at home. Just a shame this site is on private land, as I'd have loved to have walked over the site to take a closer look.
There is much evidence of medieval field boundaries and rig and furrow ploughing all around here. The land looks rich and fertile, with magnificent sheep grazing in the fields.
Perhaps a little bit later than most of the Megalithic sites recorded on TMP, but I have posted this as it was the third stop on our short circular walk west of Kirkwhelpington village, taking in 2 holy wells, this medieval moated site and a cairn. It is well worth stopping to take a closer look, particularly as Historic England describe this site as "exceptionally well preserved and is one of few surviving examples (of a medieval moated site) in Northumberland" and "The re-entrant of the ditch at the north-east corner indicates the existence of an earlier phase of settlement".
Scheduled as Historic England List ID 1011105 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 20978, the earliest reference in documentary sources dates to 1303. The interior of the site includes the foundations of four rectangular building, the largest of which is thought to be a later bastle, plus traces of enclosure walls. There are extensive remains of medieval boundary features and lots of rig and furrow.
Whilst the site is on private land, the footpaths provide good views of the earthworks. HE adds: "The entrance to the moated site is in the north-west corner where a deep hollow way enters the enclosure. An interesting feature of this monument is the curious bend or re-entrant in the surrounding ditch at the north-east corner of the moated site; this is suggestive of an earlier structure on the site. Pastscape says the interior has partly been spoiled by quarrying.
