Holy Well or Sacred Spring in St. Kilda

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this healing well - see their entry fro Tobar nam Buadh, St. Kilda, Outer Hebrides, which includes an image of the 1928 OS map showing the location of the well, together with a sketch and descriptions found in 18th century historical sources.

TNA adds: "There was a very small stone-built well-house with a low roof covering the top of the spring, inside which a small pool formed. The small well-house was described by Thomas Muir (1883) and ruins of it are reported to still cover the sacred waters, which run into an old stone trough. Muir called it the ‘spring of many virtues’, describing it as one of five holy wells on this small isle."

The well is recorded as Canmore ID 3962, the most recent entry of which is from 1967 and reads: "A stone-built well-house, situated on the hill-slope, and measuring 1.5 x 1.8m and 1.5m high. Spring water still runs into a trough within the housing. There is no trace of the alleged 'altar'." Canmore mention the well was said to cure nervous diseases.
