Ancient Village or Settlement in Canary Isles. A group of cottages at Lomo de Las Casas and Los Corrales, also known as Barranco de Las Ovejas (Refugio del Pilar, El Paso)
Text from the two information panels:
Panel 1.
This group of dwellings, located in the area’s most sheltered section consists of 79 structures. Since it was discovered in 1980, and inventory was taken in 1992. Then, in 2010, ADER La Palma and the Island Council funded archaeological excavations. The area was fenced off and information panels were installed. There have been seven archaeological surveys, five within the constructions and to exterior.
The constructions
Most of the huts are circular overall, although some are square and irregular. There are several corrals which are higher than these huts. The corral walls are less compact than in the huts, made of stone, with bits of straw and birth for filler, measuring up to 1.80 m in height. Many buildings are attached to rocky outcrops, others are partially excavated on the grounds and a few will have been left untouched. The huts and generally have a niche which served as a storage area. Its roof was made of rush or grass.
Panel 2.
The role of the village
These sites were used by people from the fourth ceramic stage. They generally dwelled in cave-like housing or huts which have long since disappeared. These excavations date back to the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and some corrals are even more recent. But why, we might ask, was such a large village established in the middle of the mountain?
They may have housed shepherds and those who came to draw wood and charcoal. These dwellings generally housed those who dug fern root which they would grind for flower to make kind of bread roll or burn in times of famine. It was extracted in late summer and is required the work of many people and this area is very favourable, because the stems of the straw are more developed so they are easy to dig.
