This is a temple complex that was rededicated by Kamehameha I in 1812 and served as the seat of his government until his death in 1819. However, the rectangular stone base of the Heiau predates Kamehameha and is of the style that would have been constructed between 450 and 1100 A.D. (David Kahelemauna Roy, Jr.).

The building and oracle tower, as well as statuary at the complex, are recent reconstructions based on descriptions of travelers, missionaries and diplomatats who visited the court.

The site is on private land owned by a hotel and beach resort. However, the site can be visited during daylight hours and guided tours are available at the hotel. The temple building itself and the area immediately around the temple appear to not accessible to the casual visitor. Many ancient temple sites are only accessble for worship.

Note: Ancient Hawaiian stone platform used for worship, damaged in March 11 tsunami, now restored.

'Ahu'ena Heiau submitted by Flickr : Ahu'ena Heiau is located on a small artificial island across from Kamakahonu Beach in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The temple of peace and prosperity was built by King Kamehameha I between 1812 and 1813 to honor Lono, the god of fertility. It served as the king's personal refuge and was his home for the last years of his life. It is believed that Kamehameha I died here. ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ancient Hawaiian stone platform used for worship, damaged in March 11 tsunami, restor by Anonymous on Wednesday, 04 January 2012
A tsunami-damaged ancient Hawaiian stone platform used for worship has been restored.

Ahuena Heiau, Inc. is a nonprofit organization of volunteers from West Hawaii serving as primary caretakers of the heiau. The group says the year-long effort to restore the heiau in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island involved 3,000 hours of volunteer service. The heiau is on the grounds of King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, which suffered damage from the tsunami triggered by the March 11 earthquake in Japan. The heiau is also on the national and state registers of historic places.

Many believe it to be one of the most culturally significant sites in Hawaii.

The project was funded in part by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
