Petroglyph Beach
Petroglyph Beach submitted by AKFisher : Petroglyphs at Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park, Wrangell, Alaska, USA. There are about 40 petroglyphs here. They are estimated to be about 8000 years old. Wiki: (JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD) (Vote or comment on this photo)
This Alaska State Historic Park contains over 35 petroglyphs pecked and carved into individual bounders on the beach. The designs feature stylized animals and human figures as well as abstract and geometric designs. Based on finds from excavations in the area some of the glyphs are estimated to be up to 8000 years old.

The observation deck overlooking the beach has several replica carvings for visitors to make their own rubbings as a memento of their visit. The location given is for the beach area and not for any particular petroglyph design.

Petroglyph Beach: Alternate names and access. by bat400 on Thursday, 09 November 2006
(User Info | Send a Message)
Older topographic maps show this beach marked under the name "Lithograph." I assume that the fine grained gray boulders where the petroglyphs are carved appear similar to lithography stones. Wrangell Island is accessible only by boat or plane.
