Stone Circles in Gambia. There are 11 Stone Circles at this site. The laterite pillars and their associated burial mounds present a vast sacred landscape created over more than 1,500 years.

It reflects a prosperous, highly organized and lasting society. The stones were quarried with iron tools and skillfully shaped into almost identical cylindrical or polygonal seven-ton pillars, on average about two metres high.

The four nearer tall stones feature on roadside advertise... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Wassu Stone Circles
Wassu Stone Circles submitted by paulcall : I visited this site briefly during a birding trip to the Gambia. It is found just east of Wassu village, and is well signposted from the main road north of the river. This photo is of the most southerly of the eleven circles found here.
