Ancient Village or Settlement in Faro
In this work, we study the archeological materials collected on the surface and during the excavation of the Early Neolithic site of Cabranosa, Sagres. These materials are studied in detail for the first time and the absolute date of the site is given. The cardial ceramics group of artifacts is one of the largest in portuguese territory with several vessels nearly complete. Remains of stone work (flakes, nuclei) predominate in the flint group of artefacts as well as an importante component of lamellae obtained by pression technique. This local productions used the silex available in the region, and the same occurred for polished stone tools. The settlement appears stable and based on the herding of ovicaprids, on an incipiente agriculture made on sandy soils near-by the rivers and on the collection of marine resources available at less than 2 km distance. The settlement of Cabranosa documents the existence in this region of sedentary populations dedicated to agriculture and herding, during the Early Neolilthic. Some non-cardial vessels suggest an exogenous origin, but from distances less than 40 km. In terms of cultural integration, this human settlement presents stronger affinities with the late cardial Neolithic of the Mediterranean litoral (East Andaluzia, Valencia) than with the nearest regions (littoral Alentejo and West Andaluzia).
