Museum in British Columbia, Canada

Located in the northern part of the Canadian Province of British Columbia, the 'Ksan Historic Vilage & Museum sets out to explain and celebrate the richness of the First Nations people who have lived on the Northwest Coast for centuries.

The main local aboriginal group are the Gitxsan people, whose home has been along the Skeena River valley. Having come across recommendations about the Museum, we made a stop there while touring earlier this year.

We expected to see examples of crafts etc (and there are many of these), but I hadn't expected the Museum to have well-crafted stone utensils and artifacts as old as those which had been found locally - some being 3000 years old.

I apologise for my ignorance, but I hadn't realised just how much 'lithic' archaeology there would be! Unfortunately, the Museum didn't allow photos, and none of their leaflets had any useful details or images to share on the Portal. I have emailed to ask for something more definitive, as I think it would be of benefit to the Museum, and I will post things if I receive anything useful.

In the meantime, if you happen to be passing along Hwy 16 from Prince George to Prince Rupert, allow yourself a brief detour at Hazelton... ksan.org
