Portland Art Museum submitted by bat400 : An Anthropomorphic Figure carved from basalt. Columbia River Valley. Pre-European Contact period. The figure is over four and a half feet tall. From the catalog: "Considering its massive size and the exaggerated genitalia touching the ground, it probably served as a public monument to commemorate an individual either real or mythical, as a symbol of fertility, strength, and renewal." One of the oldest art museums in the United States, the Portland Art Museum houses a collection of Pre-Columbian art from Meso and South America and pre-contact artifacts from western Oregon and the Columbia Plateau.

Historic period artworks by Native American artists and craftsmen can also be seen in addition to a range of western and Asian art, from both historic and contemporary periods.

Of particular interest are pre-contact basalt statues from the Columbia River valley.

For ticket prices and opening times, see the Museum website. On the first Thursday of each month admission is free from 5 – 8 p.m.

The museum also has an on-line collection.
