Levitated Mass is a 340 ton boulder, which was installed on the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 2012. It represents a large scale sculpture by the artist Michael Heizer, consisting of the boulder affixed above a concrete trench, which allows visitors to walk beneath the giant stone.

The boulder itself stems from Stone Valley Quarry in Jurupa Valley (Riverside County, California). The move of the rock to the LACMA was discussed as possibly being the heaviest object ever transported in modern times.

The work on the Levitated Mass installation was highly covered and discussed by the media in California, especially the transport on a 176-wheel truck for 11 nights. Director Doug Pay made a documentary about it. The artist Michael Heizer has never given a hint for the interpretation of Levitated Mass. However, independently of the context the individual visitor may want to see the installation on her or his own. Levitated Mass has a clear reference to the momentum of megalithic architecture.

Levitated Mass submitted by Flickr : Levitated Mass from lacma.org website: Levitated Mass by artist Michael Heizer is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on LACMA's campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. The slot gradually descends to fifteen feet in depth, running underneath the boulder. As with other works by the artist, such as Double Negative (1969), the monumental negative form is key to the exp... (Vote or comment on this photo)

The engineering of the transport of the rock notwithstanding, it is absolutely one of the most facile meaningless pieces of "art" ever presented. What could involve less artistic work or thought? Calling the air "my work" is the only thing I can think of that would involve less artistic work. What a preposterous waste of arts funding that could have gone to interesting artists with real ideas. He didn't even select an interesting looking rock. Pathetic.
