Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : Snake River Petroglyph All of the photos in this series were taken at or near Celebration Park- Idaho's only archeological State Park located near Boise and south of Melba, Idaho. It is wonderful that these are available for everyone to enjoy and the paths are also wheelchair accessible. Guffey Butte–Black Butte Archeological District includes numerous archeological sites, running approximately 34 miles (55 km) along the Snake River in Canyon, Ada, Owyhee, and Elmore counties in south-west Idaho. The area was densely populated in prehistoric times. One particularly important location is Celebration Park

It features camping, restrooms, drinking water, picnicking, self-guided tours and interpretive programs as well as fishing and access to hiking trails and the Snake River with a small day use fee. The elevation of the river at the park is approximately 2,250 feet (690 m) above sea level.

This park features Native American petroglyphs still in their original locations, dating from historical times to more than 12,000 years ago. A fresh water spring in the park area made it an ideal camping spot for many generations.

Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : Triangle and Dots Petroglyph A tepee with an TV antenna? Kidding, totally kidding. The Indians in this part of the country didn't live in tepees, they lived in wickups or subterranean pit houses. The shape of these would be more like a dome tent. Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : He Who Watches or Eyes on Side Petroglyph This really reminds me of another petroglyph near the Dalles on the Columbia River, that also has ovals within ovals that look like eyes. This one is on its side or 90 degrees to the ground, while the one on the columbia is more complex and has the eyes perpendicular to the ground. All of the photos in this series were taken at or near Celebration Par...

Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : Map Rock near Melba This was named Map Rock by early pioneers who thought it looked like a map with all the lines and symbols. What the Indians were actually trying to represent remains a mystery. Although it is one of the finest examples of prehistoric Native America Art, it lies on private land, and has nothing to protect it from vandals. Hopefully it will still be there for future generations t...

Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : Side of Map Rock- Hunters and Deer/Antelope In order to get better contrast in their photos people often use chalk on the petroglyphs. This is a form of defacement and vandalism within itself. Image copyright: Lomatium, hosted on Flickr and displayed under the terms of their API.

Celebration Park (Idaho) submitted by Flickr : Petroglyphs of Celebration Park along the Snake River south of Nampa Idaho. The boulders at Celebration Park are 15,000 year old Bonneville Flood Melon Gravel. These stones develop a patina (a tarnish that forms through oxidation) over time so dark petroglyphs are older than lighter ones. Most petroglyphs are on the south or east side of the stones but there are anomalies. Image copyright: JG...
