Red lady submitted by mfrincu : The Red Lady pictograph in Joshua Tree Park. Other faint pictographs are also visible. The red color is believed to be linked to the fertility cult. (Vote or comment on this photo)
An ancient site located near Barker Dam in Joshua Tree, California. The site belongs to the Chemehuevi indians which used it as a calendar to mark the beginning of the year at the Spring equinox. Proof of that is a small artificial hole in a stone which is lit by the Sun at noon on the equinox days (in both Spring and Fall).

You can easily reach it after only five minutes walk from the parking lot. On the trail after crossing a natural tunnel made up of two large boulders you will find the pictograph on the right hand side close to the base of the larger one. As many of the sites in Joshua Tree this one is not advertised so be sure to check the boulders for petroglyphs.

Note: A whole host of 'new' (to us) petroglyphs and other ancient sites in California that Mfrincu has been exploring - see his other pages for more.
