Valley of Fire - Atlatl Rock submitted by baz : Site in Nevada USA: The back of Atlatl Rock seems to reveal a sphinx-like profile with the rock art-endorned panel attached. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Clark County, Nevada. When you are next in Las Vegas and are in need of some relief from the gambling, live shows and bustle of the Strip, then I suggest you head out east a few miles to the Valley of Fire State Park where you can feast your eyes on the Atlatl Rock.

Amongst the many petroglyphs to be found here can be seen the finest ancient depiction of an atlatl and its dart in North America. With the bow and arrow having been developed ~1500 years ago in North America, the rock art here predates this technology. Occupation of the area is estimated from 300BC to 1150 AD, although several sources estimate that some of the rock art may be as old as 3000 years.

The State Park website can be found here.

Valley of Fire - Atlatl Rock submitted by baz : Site in Nevada USA: Some of the petroglyphs are difficult to see because the viewing platform obscures a major part of the panel. One's attention is directed mainly to the atlatl to the detriment of the many and varied other motifs.

No bows and arrows yet. Is there a date for this site?
I was surprised that the Maya used atlatls and that the bow and arrow wasn't introduced to them until the 13th century CE (they didn't have metal either).
